If you ask most Nigerians to name the tribes in the country, they will probably name the three ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. That answer is not wrong, but it leaves out hundreds of other tribes. Some of their names may even be unfamiliar to people outside the states where they are found.
The list below contains 371 tribes in Nigeria. Some tribes are connected to one state, while others are found across several states. When you read the article, you will understand it better.
This guide gives you the complete list. You will find the primary language and predominant religion for the ones available. I also included famous Nigerians for some of the ethnic groups.

How Many Tribes Are in Nigeria?
Nigeria has 371 tribes when smaller ethnic communities are listed separately. You may also see figures above 250 because some lists place related communities under one larger ethnic group.
This article uses 371 and gives each group a separate row. That allows smaller communities to appear alongside the ethnic groups that most Nigerians already know.
What Are the Three Largest Tribes in Nigeria?
Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo are Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups. They are often called the three major tribes because of their population and presence across the country.
Hausa

The Hausa are concentrated across northern Nigeria, particularly Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Bauchi. Hausa is also spoken by many Nigerians who are not ethnically Hausa. It is widely used for trade and everyday communication across much of northern Nigeria.
Hausa and Fulani are separate ethnic groups. They have different languages and histories, although the term “Hausa-Fulani” is commonly used in political and social discussions.
Yoruba

The Yoruba are mainly found in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti. Large Yoruba communities also live in Kwara and parts of Kogi.
Yoruba communities extend beyond Nigeria into Benin and Togo. The language also has several dialects, including Ijebu, Egba, Ekiti and Oyo.

Igbo

The Igbo are mainly found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. Igbo communities also live in parts of Delta and Rivers.
Igbo communities speak several dialects. Our guide to Nsukka, Enugu covers one part of Igboland.
